David Carson is an American graphic designer, art director, and surfer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for Ray Gun magazine, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout approach for which he is known.

David creates work that challenges the perceptions of what graphic design should look like: guided by instinct instead of design norms. His starting place is always to identify the spirit of a piece and what he wants viewers to feel even before they read any text.

  1. David Carson Teaches Graphic Design is now streaming on MasterClass: https://mstr.cl/3dxgj4n

  2. I bought Mastermind because of this. The course is really good in terms of opening your eyes to how you can view design and creativity. Loved it.

Also, i've known about David for over 20 years now since college and I would have killed for this kind of access when I was at college.

  3. Anyone know the music?

  4. I wish i could take this instead of stupid useless university degree 😒

  5. "If everybody loves your work, you're playing it much too safe. You need some people not liking it, and then you're probably on to something." I've heard that the best books, movies, etc. are as much hated as they are loved.

  6. For a long time, I regarded David as a fashionable designer with no philosophy. At an international design conference led by scholars, many people did not see him as their members.
But over time, after I got out of the system, I realized that I was led by a huge social bias system. Having escaped from the system,
I could understand how David was enjoying his work as a designer. I truly respect him as a designer now.

  7. I expect more recent graphics designer such as Sagi Haviv, or someone on that age. I Love Carson's method but at the moment we as graphic designer can't get a project as open as that.

  8. Interesting to see how Carson is still a 'legend' in 2021. I was showing my art-design high-school students Carson movies in 2003-2009, to get them OFF the computers and using their bare hands to create (& hopefully, their minds too.)

  9. This sort of advice was true in the pre Adobe era when designers were essentially fine artists who were hired for their styles. Is there a Masterclass for the real world for those of us that didn't get in as Boomers before market saturation? Where we learn things like how to talk your client out of Canva? How to convince your CMO to stop swapping styles every time they see a new ad on the train on the way to the office? Sure things like good layout, scale, color, contrast… all that… will always be relevant. But I do not see the point in taking a class from someone who was famous way before the modern post 2008 crash business world where EVERYTHING is due tomorrow.

EDIT: And to any entry level designers out there: there's NOTHING wrong with using guides and snapping to them. You set the guides yourself the same way you'd use a RULER back in 1972. And snapping to them is just a work smarter not harder thing. You still have to be able to design. Don't fall for these absurd Luddite platitudes.

  10. "never snap to guides" as he said that the design on the screen was literally snapping to guides

  11. Great Inspirational stuff

  12. I had the unfortunate opportunity of experiencing him at a weeklong workshop at MICA back when he was in his prime.

  13. Never snap to guides 👏👏👏

  14. I want to learn how to draw a car son.

  15. living legend. ⚡️

  16. Love David Carson but he’s not the right teacher if you’re new to design. Learn the rules first, then break them.

  17. Please bring Sir Rogear Deakins

  18. Seems cool.

On a different note, Master Classes used to have great trailers, this is not at the same level, I don't know why but this is the first trailer that I didn't like.

  19. David Carson Teaches How to Design like David Carson

  20. Yeeesssss finally!!!!!

  21. Look at David Carson's picture, one thing I know for sure I will never understand the mindset of a graphic designer and how he make things work.

  22. "Don't use guidelines. We want your mind, not your software"

  23. Ho ly shit, you did it. Can't wait to watch this one

  24. Finallly a graphic design master class. I searched through masterclass and found nothing but now i've found it!!!

  25. “never snap to guides, we want your mind not your software” oh man that made me laugh. 😂

  26. Everybody needs just a little love, lots of hope and unshakable faith.
